It’s been a long, tough road for Darkstalkers fans, with any word on new entries in the beloved fighting game series conspicuously mum ever since Capcom deemed the excellent Darkstalkers: Resurrection a commercial failure. But that hasn’t stopped Capcom from continuing to license the likenesses of fan favorite characters. Now the ever-growing list includes the newly announced nurse-themed statue of series icon Morrigan Aensland.
Morrigan is iconic for a few reasons, but the biggest is undoubtedly her sex appeal, which the new statue has no problem exploiting. Going with a “Sexy Nurse” thing, the figure is currently available for pre-order from AmiAmi, and is sculpted by the talented Tsuyoshi Hamasaki. If you want one, it will set you back a cool $100 or so when converted from yen, and that’s without the costs of shipping from Japan. The statue itself looks great, with a fantastic and clear paint job! It even gets creativity points for the giant syringe, from which a base of blood forms for the statue to stand on, deftly playing off of the “vampiric” nature of the character. If you didn’t notice, it’s also incredibly sexy.
Author’s Opinion
Look, I don’t have a problem with exploiting sex appeal to sell statues. I don’t have a problem with sex appeal in general, if that’s what you like, you go ahead and do you. I don’t even mind the fact that the sexy nurse trope has never even been depicted in Darkstalkers outside of this statue, in either comics or anime. But I do have a problem with Capcom’s continued reliance on these characters to sell merchandise, while still not willing to actually give fans any more substantial game appearances outside of re-releases and appearances in Marvel vs. Capcom games. Even when the company has been systematically re-releasing almost all of their major series in one form or another on PS4 and Xbox One, there hasn’t even been a mention of bringing Iron Galaxy’s perfect arcade ports to the modern market. Hell, I would settle for Morrigan in Street Fighter V.
Actually that would be dope.
