In an off-decision, Sony has decided to discontinue their Live Events Viewer app on both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. In an email sent out to North American PSN users, the app will be terminated on January 10. If you are a PS4 owner, however, this isn’t too much of a problem, as you can simply purchase the app from the PlayStation Store if you so desperately need it. If you’re a PS3 owner, though, there is no replacement: Once the app is gone, it’s gone, and it doesn’t seem Sony has any plans to substitute it with another one for the decade old console.
The app was launched in 2013 and was used to “watch your favorite sports, music and entertainment events live or on demand,” as Sony states in the app’s description. In addition to watching live or on-demand entertainment, Live Events Viewer allowed users to watch Sony’s press conferences as well. Looks like PS3 owners will have to resort to watching Sony’s pressers on the Internet instead of the comfort of their couch in front of their TV on their PlayStation.
Author’s Opinion
No one cares.
Okay, let me not be so cynical here. Based on 7696 ratings, the app garnered an average of four out of five stars, which must mean a good portion of those who have rated it since its launch enjoy the app to varying degrees. Statistics for the app — user base, time spent watching, amount viewed through the app, number of downloads, etc. — are difficult to find, but, if the ratings are any indication of its popularity, then Sony must have designed something worthwhile. It’s disappointing the app will be discontinued, but Sony isn’t losing too much, especially if PS4 owners can just pop into the PlayStation Store and redownload it. Sorry, PS3 owners, but it may be officially time to upgrade. Especially with, you know, Horizon Zero Dawn on the horizon.
